What should I do if I have a knocked-out tooth?

A knocked-out tooth is understandably concerning, but may be saved. Emergency dental care can help you do so. Here are the steps to take to give yourself the best chance of preserving your natural tooth. If you care for this tooth correctly and get to Bruce L. Elkind, DDS, PA, within 30-60 minutes, you have a good chance of saving it.

Handle the tooth properly

Avoid touching the tooth roots. Rather, pick it up by the crown. If it’s dirty, gently rinse it off, but don’t scrub. You don’t want to remove any tissue fragments that may help with reattachment.

Preserve the tooth

As you make your way to Dr. Elkind, hold the tooth back in its socket or between your teeth and gums. If this isn’t possible, place it in a small container of milk.

How should I react to other dental emergencies?

Swelling from an abscess or injury deserves emergency dentistry care. As you wait for your appointment, hold a cold compress or ice pack (covered with a soft cloth) against the outside of your mouth at the site of injury. Hold it for 20 minutes on and off until you get to your appointment.

If you’re experiencing excessive bleeding, apply pressure with gauze to help stop the flow.

A chipped or cracked tooth also deserves an emergency visit. If you have discomfort, rinse your mouth with salt water and then make your way to see Dr. Elkind.

If you have an oral health emergency, come to Bruce L. Elkind, DDS, PA. Call right away to check on when you can be seen.
